New for the 2018-2019 season, the Penguins Box program has succeeded in giving players a strong foundation in the game of box lacrosse. Sessions have been a learning experience for players in understanding the game of box lacrosse and how the skill set will transfer over to spring outdoor seasons.
The Penguins Box curriculum has been organized by Randy Fraser, who after a successful collegiate playing career at Springfield College (1986-1990), established himself as one of the most dominant American born box lacrosse players in the country. He amassed over 200 career points in 81 games through 13 NLL seasons with the Boston Blazers (1991-1997), New York Saints (1998-1999), and Buffalo Bandits (2001-2004). He was named Captain of US Men’s National Indoor Team (2003), scoring 1 goal and 10 assists at the FIL World Indoor Lacrosse Championship held throughout the province of Ontario Canada, ultimately leading to a Bronze Medal.
Coaching professionally, he has enjoyed tenures as an Assistant Coach for the (MLL) Boston Cannons (2006), New York Titans (2006), Boston Blazers (2007-2011), and US Men’s National Indoor (Box) Lacrosse Team, again leading to bronze at the 2007 and 2011 FIL World Indoor Lacrosse Championships in Halifax, Nova Scotia and Prague, Czech Republic, respectively.
Each week teams are working toward preparing for tournament play by implementing offensive/defense sets, transition, and becoming comfortable with the more physical style of play. Coach Alex Bunick on the progress thus far, “It’s been awesome to see how well the players have adjusted to the skills and concepts we are throwing out at them. Each week Randy is asking these players to retain a lot of knowledge about very new concepts and they have worked hard and stayed focused. We are excited to play in these tournaments in February.”
The Penguins 2020/2021, 2022, 2023, 2024 and 2026 box teams will compete in the Philly Founders Cup Tournament on February 9th and 10th in Reading, PA. The Penguins 2025 Team will play in the Jr. Blackwolves Box Lacrosse Championship on February 23rd.
