Penguins Box Lacrosse 2020-2021 Recap

2022 Penguins halftime vs. Knights on February 28th. Penguins came away with 7-6 victory.

The Penguins Box Lacrosse season officially came to close on Sunday, March 14th with intra-squad scrimmages to finish off a great season. Starting in November, the program saw over 135 Penguins practice and compete, learning and playing true box lacrosse under the direction of Penguins Director of Box Lacrosse, Greg Downing. In his first year, Greg took his 13 years of professional experience and looked to bring a deep knowledge of the game to Penguins players.

I truly enjoyed my coaching experience with the Penguins Lacrosse Program this past winter. We taught real box lacrosse principles and it was encouraging to see the players eventually understand and implement these principles in game play. An additional benefit to playing box lacrosse is significantly more drills focusing on stickwork during practice, so it was also great to see players of all ages improve their stick skills as this will translate over to field lacrosse very well.

It was the Penguins third season under USBOXLA guidelines and continues to be one of the only select programs in the state that runs a true box lacrosse season for its player. The Box program has players ranging from 3rd grade all the way to seniors in high school. Primarily operating out of the Canton Sportsplex and the Boston Sports Institute in Wellesley, the program had team and skills practices scheduled each week to further develop box specific principles.

Overall, I was extremely impressed with how our players were able to go straight from the Fall Season and starting playing box and grasping the concepts quickly. We are in our third full season and being able to see the progression that some of our players have achieved from the last few seasons is remarkable. We truly believe that this is a crucial part of becoming a well rounded lacrosse player and we have seen a dramatic difference in the players who have fully committed to playing box lacrosse each season.

Looking forward to next season, the program will continue to develop and look to add a weekly league component in addition to team practices and skills sessions.
