The year 2018 has gotten off to great start as the Penguins Winter Skills sessions started in early January. Players have been participating 2-3 times per week at sessions designed to keep their stick skills sharp and work toward preparing for their spring lacrosse seasons. Coaches have seen a huge improvement with players who attend each week. Coach Alex on consistency and improvement, “It’s been great coaching these sessions and getting to know players outside of the age group that I normally coach. I have noticed players who come consistently each week are improving after each session and these definitely go a long way.”
New for this year, the 2022, 2023 and 2024 programs have the opportunity to participate in Position Specific sessions. Attack, Midfield, Defense and Goalies each have designated evenings to attend and work on drills and fundamentals designed for their position. Coach Chris on working with defense and goalies, “These sessions have been great to get defense and goalies the extra coaching they need to elevate their games to the next level. For defenseman, we focus a lot on footwork and angles and things that may be harder to explain in a team practice setting. Goalies are getting an extreme amount of emphasis on positional work and repetitions. Its been awesome to breakdown these sessions and get to work on some of the finer details.”
The Winter Penguins Skills program will take the week of school vacation off and resume on Sunday, February 25th. The final session will take place on Wednesday, March 7th before players start their town lacrosse spring seasons.
